He completed his Bachelor's degree in Geography from Northwest Normal University, China, in 1986, followed by a Master's degree from Beijing Normal University in 1989. His commitment to environmental sciences led him to pursue a Ph.D. at the Graduate School of Environmental Science, Hokkaido University, Japan, from 1994 to 1998.
